What is Network Latency?

When a client sends a request to a server, a complicated series of network transactions are involved. A typical request path has the client sending the request to a local gateway which in turn routes to a sequence of routers … and so on.

All of this takes time, so each hop introduces a delay. Network latency is the total time, usually measured in milliseconds, required for a server and a client to complete a network data exchange.

When it comes to real-world applications, such as high frequency stock trading, minimizing latency by even a millisecond potentially gives the trader a huge competitive edge.

Regular enterprises may not focus on latency as much as Wall Street, but they should still provide the fastest response to users. It’s expecially important to minimize slow downs before customers see an impact.

A10 Networks can help reduce that latency. Learn more at: https://www.a10networks.com/glossary/what-is-network-latency//
